RE: June 2010 monthly Water Quality Report

The Environmental Services Field Offices conducted water quality monitoring in the Sabine Basin from June 14th through 16th. The results of the field monitoring are presented in this report and additional laboratory results will be included in the annual Sabine Basin Water Quality Report.

 

Sabine Basin Tidal (Including Tributaries)

 

Weather - Weather conditions in the Tidal Basin were hot with high temperatures from the upper 80s to low 90s. Low temperatures ranged from low to upper 70s. The Tidal stations did not receive any measurable rainfall in the seven days prior to the sampling event.

 Tidal Conditions Surface salinity values greater than 1 ppt were found at all but two Tidal Stations. The highest salinity value of 7.7 ppt was recorded at Sabine River station SRT1 at a depth of 10.0 meters.

Lower Sabine Basin (Toledo Bend Reservoir and Below)

 

Weather - Weather conditions in the Lower Basin were hot with high temperatures from the low to mid 90s. Low temperatures ranged from the low to mid 70s. Toledo Bend received 0.16 inches of rainfall during the seven days prior to the sampling event.

Lake Level - The level of Toledo Bend Reservoir was recorded at 169.21 feet with 204 cfs discharge at the time of sampling. Toledo Bend has a conservation pool level of 172ft msl. Reservoir profiles indicated stratification of the water column.

 

Upper Sabine Basin (Lake Tawakoni, Lake Fork Reservoir, and the River Above Toledo Bend)

 

Weather - Recent weather (previous seven days) in the Sabine River Basin was hot, with daytime highs in the upper 70s to mid 90s with lows in the upper 60s to upper 70s at Lake Tawakoni and at Lake Fork. Lake Tawakoni received 1.80 inches of rainfall and Lake Fork received 1.89 inches rainfall the week preceding the sample run.

Lake Level - The level of Lake Tawakoni was 437.11 feet msl with a 6 cfs release and the level of Lake Fork was 403.01 feet msl with a 15 cfs release at the time of sampling. Lake Tawakoni and Lake Fork have conservation pool levels of 437.5 msl and 403 msl, respectively. Reservoir profiles indicated stratification of the water column.

Segment 0501 Sabine River Tidal

Description: The designated segment includes the Sabine River from the confluence with Sabine Lake in Orange County to West Bluff in Orange County. Although some areas are quite rural, this part of the Sabine Basin has two cities with populations greater than 5,000 and a variety of industries.

Segment 0508 Adams Bayou Tidal. The segment reaches from the confluence with the Sabine River in Orange County to a point 1.1 kilometers (0.7 miles) upstream of IH-10 in Orange County.

Segment 0511 Cow Bayou Tidal. The segment reaches from the confluence with the Sabine River in Orange County to a point 4.8 kilometers (3.0 miles) upstream of IH-10 in Orange County.

 

Sampling Conditions: The Tidal stations received no measureable rainfall in the seven days prior to the sample event.  Surface salinity values greater than 1 ppt were found at all but two Tidal stations. The highest salinity value of 7.7 ppt was recorded at Sabine River station SRT1 at a depth of 10.0 meters.

Description: The designated segment includes the Sabine River from West Bluff in Orange County to the confluence with Caney Creek in Newton County. The largest tributary is Big Cow Creek (Segment 0513). This is largely a rural area with no major industries or cities.

Segment 0513 Big Cow Creek from the confluence with the Sabine River in Newton County to a point 4.6 kilometers (2.9 miles) upstream of R 255 in Newton County.

Sampling Conditions: The USGS recorded flow at Sabine River station SR2 was 4,820 cfs.

Segment 0503 - Sabine River Above Caney Creek

Description: The designated segment includes the Sabine River from a point immediately upstream of the confluence with Caney Creek in Newton County up to Toledo Bend Dam in Newton County. This is largely a rural area with no major cities and few industries. The two major tributaries include Bayou Anacoco and Bayou Toro that flow from Louisiana.

Sampling Conditions: The USGS recorded flow at Sabine River station SR3 was 1,770cfs and the USGS flow at Sabine River station SR5 was 2,330cfs.

Description: The designated segment includes the Sabine River from Toledo Bend Dam in Newton County to a point immediately upstream of the confluence of Murvaul Creek in Panola County. Although this area is largely rural, it includes two cities with populations greater than 5,000. Murvaul Creek is a major tributary that enters upstream from the reservoir.

 

Sampling Conditions: Toledo Bend received 0.16 inches of rainfall during the week prior to sampling.  The level of Toledo Bend Reservoir was recorded at 169.21 feet with 204 cfs discharge at the time of sampling. Segment 0504


Segment 0505 - Sabine River Above Toledo Bend Reservoir

Description: The designated segment includes the Sabine River from a point immediately upstream of the confluence of Murvaul Creek in Panola County to a point 100 meters (110 yards) downstream of US 271 in Gregg County. Segment 0505 is used extensively for water supply and contains the highest concentration of population in the Sabine Basin. The area includes a large section of the East Texas Oilfield as well as numerous industries.

Segment 0506 - Sabine River Below Lake Tawakoni

Description: The designated segment includes the Sabine River from a point 100 meters (110 yards) downstream of US 271 in Gregg County to Iron Bridge Dam in Rains County. This is a largely rural area, but historically numerous dairies were located in the watershed. The major tributaries include:

Segment 0514 - Big Sandy Creek from the confluence with the Sabine River in Upshur County to a point 2.6 kilometers (1.6 miles) upstream of SH 11 in Hopkins County.

Segment 0515 - Lake Fork Creek from the confluence with the Sabine River in Wood County to Lake Fork Dam in Wood County.

Segment 0512 - Lake Fork Reservoir from Lake Fork Dam in Wood County up to the normal pool elevation of 403 feet.

Sampling Conditions: Lake Fork recorded 1.89 inches of rainfall the preceding seven days prior to sampling. The level of Lake Fork was 403.01 feet msl with a 15 cfs release at the time of sampling. Reservoir profiles indicated stratification of the water column. The USGS recorded flows were

1410 cfs at Sabine River Station SR17, 825 cfs at Sabine River Station SR19 and 314 cfs at Sabine River Station SR21. The USGS recorded flow for Big Sandy Creek was 290 cfs.
